Before you call

What we will ask you

You do not need any of this to ask a question. But if your paper work is to hand, we can usually tell you exactly where you stand in one conversation.

  • 01Whether you have filed a tax return before, and for which years
  • 02Your UTR number, if you have one — we can help you find it if not
  • 03Where your income came from: employment, self-employment, property, dividends or investments
  • 04Any documents you already have, such as a P60, P45 or interest statements
  • 05Whether HMRC has contacted you about a return or a deadline

Deadlines matter more than you think

Online returns for the previous tax year are due by 31 January. HMRC charges an automatic £100 for a late return, even if you owe nothing. If you are close to a deadline, call us rather than email.

Registering for the first time

If this is your first return you must register with HMRC before you can file, and your UTR arrives by post. That can take a few weeks, so it is worth starting early rather than in January.
